Point Boro Aims for Another Strong Season with Experienced, Balanced Roster

Point Boro Poised for Another Strong Season with Experienced Lineup

With a roster stacked with returning talent and battle-tested wrestlers, the Point Boro Panthers enter the 2025 season looking to cement their place as one of the top programs in the Shore Conference. Following a successful 2024 campaign, the Panthers return a deep and well-balanced lineup capable of making another push for a Top 10 finish in the Shore and a strong postseason showing.

The lower weights are headlined by the dynamic senior duo of Joey DeAngelo and Frankie Burgio, who have been a force for the Panthers since their freshman years. DeAngelo, a three-time State qualifier, enters the season just one win away from the 100-victory milestone. After falling just one win short of a State medal in each of the last two seasons, he is determined to make the podium at Boardwalk Hall in his final run. Burgio, also a three-time State qualifier, begins the year with 89 career wins and brings a relentless style that has made him one of the most consistent competitors in the lineup.

Supporting them down low are returning junior starters Mikey DeAngelo and West Matta, who combined for 37 wins last season. Mikey DeAngelo battled through injuries last year but still managed 18 victories, while Matta notched 19 wins in a strong campaign. Adding to the depth is freshman Jax Corino, a Cadet State Champion, who is expected to make an immediate impact and add another dangerous element to the Panthers’ lower half.

At the upper weights, sophomore Jake Clayton leads the charge after a historic freshman season. Clayton dominated at Districts to win the 24-title, finished runner-up at Regions, and then went on to place eighth at States—becoming Point Boro’s first State medalist since 2010 and the first freshman in program history to earn a spot on the podium in Atlantic City. Now with a year of experience under his belt, Clayton has his sights set on even greater success in his sophomore campaign.

The upper weights also feature a strong veteran presence, including seniors Braden Platt and George Walsh, both of whom medaled at Districts last season. Tanner Hynes and Brayden Clark add further depth, each finishing just outside the medal rounds at Districts with fourth-place finishes. This experienced core gives the Panthers a solid foundation up top, ensuring they remain competitive in both duals and tournament settings.

With balance across all weight classes and plenty of postseason experience, the Panthers have all the ingredients necessary for a big season. A veteran-heavy team like this has the potential to start strong and build momentum early, which will be crucial as they aim to contend for the B-Division title against tough competition in Howell, Red Bank Catholic, Middletown North, and Ocean Township. Beyond the division race, Point Boro has the firepower to make an impact in the individual postseason, with multiple wrestlers primed to make deep runs at Districts, Regions, and potentially in Atlantic City.

As the season unfolds, the Panthers will look to capitalize on their experience, depth, and championship mindset. With a roster full of proven competitors and rising stars, Point Boro is ready to make another statement in 2025—both in the Shore Conference and beyond.
