Colonials Poised for Breakout Season with Strong Leadership and Promising Freshman Class

Colonials Set Sights on Breakout Season with Deep, Balanced Roster

With a strong mix of experienced senior leaders and a promising freshmen class, the Colonials are gearing up for what could be a major step forward this season. After a dramatic improvement from six wins in 2023 to 15 in 2024, the team is aiming even higher, backed by an impressive roster of over 65 athletes.

Depth and experience highlight the lower weights, where four veteran starters return to provide stability while integrating talented freshmen into the lineup. Senior Josiah Sweeney, a two-time District medalist with 44 wins over the past two seasons, headlines the group alongside fellow seniors Xander Bartuk (third at Districts) and Sean Murphy (16 wins last season). Junior Jose Torres also brings valuable experience to the table.

In the middleweights, returning senior starters John Murphy and Josh Toledo will be key contributors, while up top, junior Onesimo Nieto looks to build on his strong 23-win season. Nieto, who competed at both 215 and heavyweight last year, has the potential for a breakout season as he anchors the upper weights. His ability to adapt to different opponents and capitalize on his strength gives the Colonials a formidable presence in the upper weight classes.

Beyond individual performances, the Colonials' success this season will largely depend on the team’s ability to develop and maintain chemistry throughout the lineup. The coaching staff has emphasized the importance of pushing each other in practice, building endurance, and sharpening technique to ensure the team is prepared for the rigorous schedule ahead. With several key matchups on the horizon, maintaining consistency and avoiding injuries will be crucial factors in sustaining momentum.

The team’s impressive numbers extend beyond the boys’ squad, with a growing girls' contingent adding to the strength of the program. This growth in participation demonstrates the club’s commitment to expanding opportunities for young athletes and creating a competitive training environment for all wrestlers. Upperclassmen will be crucial in guiding the younger wrestlers while staying focused on their own success on the mat. The team has also emphasized mental toughness, knowing that wrestling is as much about strategy and resilience as it is about strength and skill.

With a deep and balanced lineup, the Colonials are set to be a major factor in a competitive divisional race featuring Manalapan, Brick Township, Toms River South, and Keansburg. Each of these teams presents its own unique challenge, and the Colonials will need to bring their best effort every match to remain in contention.

With momentum on their side and a room full of talent, the Colonials are ready to take the next big step in their program’s continued rise. The combination of seasoned leadership, young talent, and an increasingly competitive mindset positions them as a team to watch as the season unfolds.
